With plain old prophetic foresight now repackaged in 21st Century techno-speak, science fiction writers are busy exploring the nexus between man and machine, self and other, reality and virtual reality. The gist of it all is pregnant with implication: if we are nothing more than our memories; if our memories are but bits of data; if technological innovation can record these bits the same way it manipulates all other information; then what does it mean to be oneself?

Philip K. Dick touched on these very questions in his short story “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” Adapted into a kind of futuristic film noir under the title of Blade Runner, the theme focuses on just what it means to be human in a world where very humanlike androids can be made.

Another film adapted from a Dick short is Total Recall, involving a government agent’s manufactured memories. More recently, the Leonardo Dicaprio vehicle Deception also explored the same what-if scenarios: what if memories could be planted? Never mind data recovery; seems like technologies will one day create the need for deliberate data loss! And indeed, there are any number of science fiction stories devoted to that topic, too…

Though the existing economic turmoil has also displaced Connecticut realty, industry experts like Isaac Toussie believe that there’s no danger of oversupply in Connecticut mainly due to the state’s inventory levels being rather constant, likely because of Connecticut’s housing escaping the kind of speculation other places have seen. Yes, mortgages are harder to come by, but a lot of this is because of the long-overdue correction of slipshod lending practices in the first place and is actually, in the long term, a positive development for Connecticut’s economy.

Plastic Water Tanks And An Unsual Connection To WWII

Plastic water tanks are a far cry from the armored behemoths also known as tanks, but they do have a curious historical connection. Yes, that’s correct, modern plastics were developed after World War II, while tanks first made their debut in the waning years of the Great War, but there’s something of a relationship.

While not plastic water tanks, military tanks had been first so named by their British creators in an effort to disguise their research and development. It was hoped that by classifying these inventions basically as “tanks” on paper, any German spies who might have gotten a hold of the secret documents that referred to them could perhaps be mislead. As it turned out, the label stuck and tanks have been referred to as just that ever since.

In English, anyway. In German, and many other languages, they are known as only “armor,” a more appropriate term that is a recognized synonym in the English-speaking world, particularly among military circles. A far cry from today’s plastic water tanks indeed, but the thought is never far away in the minds of military history buffs.

The connection is a little more than simply etymological, actually, as the earliest designs did look like nothing more than simple water tanks to those who had the security clearance to see them. Tanks have dominated the battlefield for over sixty years, and even these days they form the core of most conventional land warfare tactics.

The appearance of attack helicopters and guided missiles have greatly reduced their striking power, and also the asymmetrical warfare prevalent in conflicts today render them ill-suited for most missions, but nothing on the horizon can match the tank in its useful combination of firepower, maneuverability, and defensive capacity. Though less used, the tank still figures eminently in invasion tactics and grand strategy and should find a role for itself in the decades yet to come.

Queen City of the Hudson

Welcome to another edition of Isaac Toussie’s real estate insights. Today Isaac Toussie will be talking about an upstate town that once rivaled New York for industry and commerce. Originally from the native term “Uppu-qui-ipis-in” which means “reed-covered hut by the water,” Poughkeepsie today has expanded beyond huts into a permanent city of some forty-three thousand people. Poughkeepsie is in fact the name of both a town and a city, both municipalities right next to one another because the city actually used to be the western part of the town (and, incidentally, was an independent village in its own right before that). Except for legal purposes, and such services as fire and police, the two communities are often viewed as one, with a total population of more than seventy-five thousand people. The town is actually home to much more people than the city, which counts only some thirty-thousand-plus residents.

Thus, it’s expected that their respective real estate markets will be quite different. A closer examination of the latest demographical figures shows that the town is much more affluent than the city, with a median income of over fifty-five thousand dollars a year as opposed to well under thirty-thousand for the city. Indeed, the Town of Poughkeepsie is able to provide for its own emergency services, which are staffed by fully paid civil servants, and not volunteers as is the case with many a suburban community.

As for the City of Poughkeepsie, it’s been severely battered by the economic malaise afflicting the rest of the state and the country as a whole. Average listing price in the two-week period between January 20, 2010 and February 3, 2010 fell almost thirty thousand dollars, to two hundred and fifty-one thousand dollars, though almost five thousand of that has been “recovered” as of February 10. However, the actual median selling price, based on two hundred and thirty-four homes sold, is almost thirty-three thousand dollars short of the median listing price, at barely two hundred and twenty thousand. Average price per square foot in the city is one hundred and thirty-two dollars.

Poughkeepsie was once the “Queen City of the Hudson,” but has suffered economic problems for the past twenty-plus years and was just beginning to recover in fits and starts when the recent recessionary woes struck. This has obvious implications for local realty, both residential and commercial. The Town of Poughkeepsie, however, seems rather more vibrant in comparison. International Business Machines, Incorporated, was once the most notable employer around, and while the company still maintains a campus in town, most of its production has been moved elsewhere. Vassar College in the City of Poughkeepsie is arguably the most notable employer now.

Should you purchase any Poughkeepsie property? Well, there’s no way it’s reclaiming its glory days, so the local real estate market is never going to be a hot one. But if your goals are more modest, and especially if you live in the city yourself, of course, Poughkeepsie property can be a solid investment.
